The Angels That Sinned "Chained in Darkness", Part 4


With this 4th paper, we are going to continue this oft-neglected topic which many regard as being of little importance, and give it only a once-over surface reading. In this edition, we shall continue to scrutinize Clifton L. Fowler’s The Angels That Sinned, written in 1929 and reprinted by Dan Gayman of the Church of Israel in 1992. As we will see, Fowler was amazingly way ahead of his time on this subject, although he did fall short in certain areas which I will address. He divided his 31 page booklet into seven subchapters thusly:

I. The Angels That Sinned Were At One Time Angels Of Righteousness And Glory.

II. The Angels That Sinned Were Disobedient In The Days Of Noah.

III. The Angels That Sinned Are The Same As The Sons Of God Of Genesis Six.

IV. The Angels That Sinned, Sinned In Like Manner To Sodom And Gomorrha.

V. The Angels That Sinned Became The Progenitors Of The Giants.

VI. The Angels That Sinned Particularly Aimed At The Pollution Of The Women Of The Race.

VII. The Angels That Sinned Are Now Imprisoned In Tartarus Awaiting Judgment.”

On pages 19-23, Fowler writes of what he calls:

V. The Angels That Sinned Became The Progenitors Of The Giants thusly:

The giants of the days of old were not imaginary, they were awful realities. The corrupt, sinful, and voluptuous giants which move through the legendary pages of Babylonian, Greek, and Roman Mythology as heathen deities, have their origin and foundation in fact. The giants existed. Many of the heathen yarns about them are doubtless inventions, but back of the mass of myth, legend, and saga with which this subject is loaded, stands the testimony of both archaeology and Scripture that there once trod upon this old earth a race of beings of stupendous stature, who mysteriously appeared, flourished for a season, in spite of their great size, prodigious strength, and supernatural knowledge, proved, finally, to be sterile and hence incapable of reproduction. They were not overcome by their enemies, they simply died out. And when they were gone, the stories of their impure and mighty deeds, artfully expanded and embellished, became the basis for the heathen religions of all the nations of the ancient day. Heathen mythology is not one hundred percent myth. When traced back to its fountainhead we find a beginning of solid fact.

[My Critical Note: Fowler uses Chamber’s Encyclopedia attempting to prove that hybridism produces sterility. This may be true with mules, but is hardly credible with Mexicans, Arabs or the various castes of India, to name a few. “The theory that hybrids are uniformly sterile and that this sterility is provided in nature ... was long held by scientists, but is no longer supported.” (World Scope Ency.) Back to Fowler.]

The Scripture makes more or less frequent mention of men of abnormal size. To us who believe God’s Word, this fact alone is sufficient proof that the beings called the ‘giants’ once lived. We note a few of the passages:

“‘And they brought an evil report of the land which they had searched, unto the children of lsrael, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

“‘And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.’ (Numbers 13:32-33).”

“‘The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims [the sons of Anak]; which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites called them Emims.’ (Deuteronomy 2:10-11).”

“‘That also [the land of Ammon] was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims ...’ (Deut. 2:20).”

“‘... the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.’ (Deut. 3:13).”

“‘And yet again there was war at Gath, there was a man of great stature, whose fingers and toes were four and twenty, six on each hand, and six on each foot: and he also was the son of the giant. But when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea David’s brother slew him. These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.’ (I Chr. 20:6-8).”

The writers of the Old Testament employ two Hebrew words which mean ‘giants.’ They are Nephilim and Rephaim. The word Nephilim occurs three times. It is correctly translated ‘giants’ in every instance. The word Rephaim occurs thirty-one times in its several forms. The translators have observed that the word means ‘giants’ and have so rendered it seventeen times. But unfortunately seven of its occurrences are translated ‘dead,’ once it is rendered ‘deceased,’ and six times it is simply transliterated ‘Rephaim.’ All these occurrences would have been made much more clear to the average reader if the word had been uniformly rendered ‘giants.’ The combined root meanings of these words constitute a divine revelation as to the origin and character of the giants. Nephilim is derived from an old Hebrew root meaning ‘to fall,’ evidently pointing to the fact that the giants are the offspring of the fallen angels. Rephaim is also from an old Hebrew root and means ‘to mend by stitching,’ indicating the fact that these giants are the product of a satanic attempt to ‘stitch’ together the nature of angels and the nature of men, thus producing hybrids. These two Hebrew roots, from which come the two words meaning ‘giants,’ tell us an illuminating story indeed. The giants were the progeny of the fallen ones and were satanic hybrids – man and angel, natural and supernatural. To this conclusion that the giants were the offspring of the fallen angels, the testimony of the sixth [chapter] of Genesis is in agreement.

“‘... the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. ... There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.’ (Genesis 6:2, 4).”

These words point to only one tenable position. By presenting verse four with a portion of the material elided the inevitable sense of the passage becomes more clear:

“‘There were giants ... when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men and they bare children to them ...’

The Bagster translation of the Septuagint sets forth this fact most satisfyingly:

“‘And they bare children to them, those were the giants of old, the men of renown.’ (Genesis 6:4).”

When the awful sin of fornication between angels and women took place, what was the issue of that abominable act? The answer of the passage is – giants! Thus we observe that the remarkable root meanings which we have seen in the two words which the translators have correctly rendered ‘giants,’ and the inescapable significance of Genesis 6, point to the conclusion that the fruitage of this execrable union between celestial beings and earth beings was a hybrid harvest of horrid monsters whose presence upon the earth was so vile and repugnant to God that He swept them, and all who had been polluted by them, into eternity by means of the flood. Then when the angels repeated the sin, which repetition is indicated by the words ‘... and also after that ...’ the same horrid phenomenon of an irruption of giants immediately took place. God’s reply to the angels when they persisted in their sin after the flood, was to plunge them into chains of darkness in Tartarus, there to await judgment, and there they are to the present hour.

The uncompromising attitude of God toward the giants is revealed by the fact that He swept them from the earth in the flood. The wrath of God against the very existence of the giants is also shown by the fact that when the angels repeated their sin after the flood, thus showing their determination to infest the earth with giants, instead of sending another flood and exterminating the giants, He imprisoned the angels.

The giants, being the offspring of angels and men, were hybrids. Being hybrids their continuation upon the earth was destined to be short. The testimony of science on this point is clear.

“‘As a rule it may be said that hybrids are not fertile.’ (Appleton’s New Practical Encyclopaedia, vol. 3, p. 275). [Which is not necessarily true. C.A.E.]

“‘In the human species it is a well established fact that marriage between remote varieties or races tends to sterility.’ (The Americana, vol. 14, page 535). [Which is not necessarily true. C.A.E.]

“‘Hybrids ...are often so unstable that they tend rapidly to die out.’ (Chambers Encyclopaedia, vol. 6, page 23). [Which is not necessarily true. C.A.E.]

The hybridism of the giants cannot be successfully challenged, hence we do not have to pursue the narrative of Scriptures very far before we find the writers referring to ‘the remnant of giants.’

“‘For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubits of a man.’ (Deut. 3:11).”

“‘And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei.’ (Joshua 12:4).”

“‘All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.’ (Joshua 13:12).”

They were dying out. The doom of the hybrid was upon them. In a little while they disappear from the narrative entirely. In spite of their great prowess, their monstrous bodies, and their unequaled energies, their power to reproduce dies away. They enter the inescapable powerlessness which was predetermined by their hybridism, and perish from the earth. They were not defeated by surrounding nations, but by the sin of their progenitors who sought by their iniquity to overthrow God’s repeated declaration – ‘after his kind.’

[My Critical Note: I wish Fowler were right that all hybrids would eventually die out. If it were true, today there would be no Mexicans, Arabs, Canaanite-jews or countless numbers of hybrid mixtures in India, not to mention Egypt, South America and the Philippines, etc. Besides, I can demonstrate that the Canaanite-jews retain the giantism and dwarfism from the fallen angels to this very day. Deut. 3:11 must be understood in context to be speaking of the land of the Ammonites. Later, in Palestine, we see Goliath and his brothers, who are also giants (i.e., 1 Chron. 20. Back to Fowler.]

God’s attitude toward the giants is an attitude of revulsion, and rejection. The giants were the product of a satanic miracle. How could God countenance them in His universe? They were not creatures of God’s making. They were not a part of God's plan, and God’s plan is perfect. They were sinful and corrupt superfluities. Furthermore, they were self evidently imitations of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, for the Lord Jesus is both human and divine, while these hell-born caricatures of Christ were both natural and supernatural. Since there was no place for them in the perfect plan of God, it follows that God had prepared no eternity for them. They were revolting hybrids, satanically conceived and satanically produced, the putrid fruitage of the enemy’s malign manifestation and perversion of the laws of God. They are detestable excrescences hurled by the adversary into God’s universe. They have no rights in the realms of the angels, they have no rights in the realms of men! Where do they go? Where do they spend eternity? Will they rise from the dead? The Psalmist raises this very question in the 88th Psalm. The question occurs in a group of six questions. All of the other questions should be answered ‘No,’ hence the strong inference is that ‘No’ is the answer to the question concerning the giants. The question of the Psalmist is,

“‘... shall the dead (Hebrew ‘Rephaim,’ giants) arise and praise thee?’ (Psalms 88:10).”

The significance of this question has been quite hidden by the unhappy rendering of ‘Rephaim.’ The answer, as indicated by the context of questions, is an emphatic negative. The giants shall not rise. The giants shall not praise Him. Such praise could only besmirch the glory of God.

But lest there should still be a question in the mind of some inquiring soul, the Holy Spirit has made it still more clear in Isaiah 26:13-14 that there is no resurrection for the giants:

“‘O Lord our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased [Rephaim], they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.’ (Isaiah 26:13-14).”

Isaiah confesses that ‘other lords’ beside the Lord God have had dominion over Israel. The student of Israel’s history knows who the ‘other lords’ were to whom Israel had turned. They were Baal and Ashtaroth (Judges 10:6; I Samuel 12:10; Judges 2:13). Speaking of these lords, Baal and Ashtaroth, the gods of the heathen, the prophet declares, ‘They are dead, they shall not live, they are giants, they shall not rise!’ This reveals to us that the gods of the Gentile nations are none other than the old giants, the hybrid offspring of the fallen angels and the daughters of men, and then declares that there is no resurrection for those unclean creatures ....”

I wrote along the same lines as Clifton L. Fowler addressed in my Research Papers Proving The Two Seedline Seduction Of Eve. Here are some excerpts:

The next place we find Cain is in Genesis 15:19, and we will have to read verses 18 through 21:

18 In the same day Yahweh made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: 19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, 20 And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, 21 And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.”

It is important to understand that Yahweh was going to keep Israel in Egypt until four hundred years of “iniquity” had transpired by these people, and came to the “full”, verse 16. These people are generally termed as Amorites, probably because they were the dominant group. Anyway, here we have the Kenites #7017, or the descendants of Cain. We are going to have to look into this thing further to see the significance of what this passage is all about and how Cain fits into it. We are simply told in Genesis 15:16 that Yahweh was going to leave these nations, generally called Canaanites, which included the Amorites, until their iniquity (#5771) came to the “full.” This process was to continue for four hundred years to come to completion. The term “iniquity” here means perversity (willfully deviating from acceptable or conventional behavior). We are going to soon see what kind of behavior this might have been.

Well, one of these nations among the Canaanites was the Kenites (#7017), which were descendants of Cain. Now being that Cain was of the Satanic seed line, he would infect his Satanic blood among all these nations. This is what it would take four hundred years to accomplish. Many of the tribes listed as living in that land were the descendants of Ham’s cursed son, Canaan, and their lines would become polluted by Cain’s seed. The history of that area is a history of infiltration of many diverse people. It is too long to present in this article. The main thing to comprehend, at this point, is how the descendants of Cain moved in the area and mixed their blood among the various tribes.

There are two other nations among these ten nations worth mentioning, the Kenizzites and Rephaim.

William Finck, in proofreading this paper, discovered a serious mistake I had made back around 1997 in my research, which I have deleted from this paper and will correct on other papers that I have written. I had picked up a defective remark from Matthew Poole’s Commentary On The Holy Bible, volume 1, page 38 on the subject of the “Kenizzites”.

The name Kenizzite is #H7074 in Strong’s, and is used only once as a Canaanite tribe of people, and three times as “Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite”, Num. 32:12; Josh. 14:6 & Josh. 14:14, obviously an Israelite, and not in any way related the Canaanite tribe of the Kenizzites.

Whatever ultimately happened to the Canaanite tribe of Kenizzites, we are not precisely told, but are given one clue: “... for the iniquity of the Amorites (meaning all the ten tribes of Canaanites) is not yet full” Gen. 15:16. If that “iniquity” was race-mixing (which I believe it was), Esau’s descendants, through his Hittite wives, would have included the genetics of the Canaanite tribe of the Kenizzites.

Now let’s talk about these “Rephaim.” The Zondervan Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible, volume 5, page 64, says this in part:

REPHAIM. ... The inhabitants of Trans-Jordan in pre-Israelite times whom the Moabites and Ammonites called respectively ‘Emim’ and ‘Zamzummim’ ... ‘giants’ ... Their land is one of ten ethnic groups promised to Abraham (Gen. 15:20). ... Deut. 2:10, 11 says that they were great, many and tall like the Anakim. Og, king of Bashan, for example possessed a king size iron bed, nine cubits long and four cubits broad. ... Giants among the Philistines who fought against David and his mighty men along their disputed border both at Gezer ... and at Gath ... These giants were the descendants of Rapha, the eponymous ancestor of these Rephaim.”

Now that we know this, let’s analyze what we have here: Emim-Zanzummim Giants Mixed With Edomite And Cainite Satanic Seed.


Now in Genesis 15:19-21 are listed ten nations and they race-mixed so much that in Deuteronomy 7:1-2 there are only seven. The Kenites, Kenizzites and Rephaims were completely absorbed by the other nations of this group from which the “jews” are extracted. The Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible, Abridged by Ralph Earle, page 38, has this to say:

The Kenites. Here are ten nations mentioned, though afterwards reckoned but seven; see Deut. vii. 1; Acts xiii. 19. Probably some of them which existed in Abram’s time had been blended with others before the time of Moses, so that seven only out of the ten, then remained.”

In the Peake’s Commentary on the Bible, page 116 we find this about this mixed group of nations spoken of in Genesis 15:19-21:

When the Israelites entered Canaan they found there a very mixed population generally designated by the term Amorite or Canaanite.”

How, then, do we know that this is what happened? Well, we can know this because we know the lifestyles of what kind of people they were. It is recorded in the 18th chapter of Leviticus and we will read verses 24 and 25 [and I see this as including Kenizzites]:

Leviticus 18:24-25: 24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: 25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.” So we see that the Rephaim fallen angels were absorbed by the ten Canaanite nations of Gen. 15:19-21, from which today’s jews get their giantism & dwarfism!
